The announcement of India's final squad for the ICC World Cup 2023 has been made.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled India's formidable 15-man squad for the highly anticipated ICC World Cup 2023, scheduled to kick off on October 5. The squad reveal took place at Earl's Regency in Kandy, with BCCI's chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, and the newly appointed captain, Rohit Sharma, making the announcements.
The most notable inclusion in the squad was KL Rahul, who earned his spot after being declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Rahul is set to join his teammates in Sri Lanka for the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2023. Additionally, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav successfully reclaimed their places in the squad, while Sanju Samson, who served as a reserve in India's Asia Cup squad, unfortunately, missed out.
For Sanju Samson, this marks the second occasion in two years where he narrowly missed securing a World Cup berth. Last year, he found himself in a similar situation when India preferred Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik over him for the T20 World Cup. Now, almost a year later, Samson faces a similar outcome, with Ishan and a fit-again Rahul ahead of him in the pecking order.
The remaining slots in the squad were relatively straightforward to fill. Rohit Sharma will lead the team, and it boasts an array of cricketing stars including Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shubman Gill. Among the fast bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj have all secured their places, while medium-pacer Shardul Thakur was chosen for his ability to strengthen the lower order.
Unfortunately, Prasidh Krishna, who recently made a comeback from a lengthy injury layoff and earned a spot in India's Asia Cup squad, did not make the final cut. Similarly, the promising young talent Tilak Varma missed out on the World Cup squad. India's middle order will be anchored by Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, with Suryakumar Yadav serving as a reliable backup option. Kuldeep Yadav has been included as the sole specialist spinner in the squad, suggesting a shift in the management's trust from Yuzvendra Chahal. Notably, there was no place for the off-spinner R Ashwin either, leaving India with only three spin-bowling options in Kuldeep, Jadeja, and Axar Patel.
As the World Cup draws closer, cricket enthusiasts and fans alike eagerly await India's journey in the tournament, hoping for a stellar performance from this talented and formidable squad. Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth analysis as we follow India's quest for cricketing glory in the ICC World Cup 2023.
